Residents and businesses in the 559 area code should prepare for a major change in dialing procedures starting next week. Beginning February 26, 2025, all calls within the 559 area must include 1 + the area code + the phone number—even for local calls. Any calls dialed with only seven digits will not go through, and callers will hear a recording instructing them to redial using the new format.
To accommodate the growing demand for phone numbers, a new 357 area code is being introduced as an overlay to the existing 559 region. While current phone numbers will remain the same, the way people dial calls must change to ensure a smooth transition.
✅ February 26, 2025 – Dialing 1 + area code + phone number becomes mandatory.
✅ March 26, 2025 – New phone numbers in the area may be assigned the 357 area code instead of 559.
📞 Start using the new dialing procedure now to get accustomed to the change.
🔧 Update auto-dialers, home security systems, medical alert devices, and saved contacts.
📄 Review and revise printed materials, such as business cards, pet ID tags, and checks.
🚨 Emergency numbers (911, 988, 211, etc.) will remain the same.
