U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) has announced that Madera will receive over $54 million in funding as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This investment, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Infrastructure Project Assistance (Mega) Program, is aimed at constructing a high-speed rail station to support the Merced-Bakersfield California High-Speed Rail Interim Service.
The Madera High-Speed Rail Station Project will enhance the existing Madera Amtrak Station by introducing new platforms, trackwork, and an overhead contact system. In addition to these essential upgrades, the project will feature a bus depot, expanded auto parking, an access roadway network, a multi-use path, and a modern station building.
“This award is crucial for the San Joaquin Valley and California. We are extremely grateful to Senator Alex Padilla and our federal delegation for supporting this integral and transformational grant funding. The Madera station project would improve the connection to the Madera community and serve as a multi-modal connection hub, allowing transfers between the San Joaquins service and the future high-speed rail line. In addition, this project will help aid the region and the state in its goals to reduce transportation-related pollution and allow for the continued development of passenger rail in California,” said Stacey Mortensen, Executive Director of the San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority (SJJPA).
Madera City Manager, Arnoldo Rodriguez emphasized the importance of this funding for Madera and the broader Central Valley community. “This high-speed rail station is a pivotal component of our efforts to improve transportation options, create good-paying jobs, and promote cleaner air in the region,” he stated. “With this investment, we are not only enhancing mobility but also connecting Madera to the future of California’s transportation network.”
This funding marks a significant step forward for Madera as it prepares for the transformative high-speed rail service, promising to enhance economic opportunities and environmental sustainability in the region.
